Nice piece and I appreciate your three recommendations at the end. Simple steps to help better align assessments with student learning.

At a meta level I’m curious about the experience of writing a piece together with your students. I’m considering doing something similar with a few of mine this semester and would be interested to hear what worked best in your experience and anything you would try differently if you were to do it again.

Me, too. This aspect intrigues me. It would be cool to hear the students’ voices in the text. It would be interesting and helpful for many of us. Thanks for sharing this idea, Josh—and thanks for writing the piece as well:)

This is great. My most recent post makes some similar observations about grading from a slightly different angle. One thing that might also be interesting is encouraging students to "publish" their writing for a wider audience. My guess is that might change the stakes from grading to something even more validating. School publications do this well but I would think teachers could leverage that in creative ways.
